António Faria
António Faria graduated in Communication Design from IADE, where he later taught between 1992 and 1998. He completed the Advanced Course in Fine Arts at Ar.Co, specialising in Project Design, and taught at ETIC from 2015 to 2019. Alongside his teaching activity, he has maintained a continuous professional practice as a designer.
His artistic work is grounded in drawing, which he approaches systematically, favouring large-scale monochromatic formats. His practice explores drawing as both a conceptual and material process, engaging with silence, memory, and the tension between presence and absence. In recognition of his work, he received the Second Prize at the Art Olympia International Biennial in Tokyo in 2015 and the Excellence Award at the same biennial in 2019.
In 2019, he presented the installation Observatório, objecto e desenhos at the Serralves Museum. Subsequent institutional exhibitions include the Côa Museum (Desenho, uma força que nasce do silêncio) and MNAC (O Elogio da Melancolia) in 2020. He has participated in numerous exhibition cycles and projects, notably Carpe Diem project, exhibitions at the MHNC-UP Biodiversity Museum, and (Im)materiality – Not a Museum.
Between 2022 and 2023, he took part in the project Portugal Entre Patrimónios, presenting a trilogy of exhibitions – O Sopro do Silêncio, O Sopro da Cinza, and O Sopro da Luz – shown respectively in Coimbra, Lisbon, and Vila Franca de Xira. His work has been exhibited widely in Portugal and internationally, in museums, galleries, and major art fairs.
CPS Project Description
The CPS Project brings together a body of work that questions the possibility – or impossibility – of representing nature in contemporary art, while reflecting on its persistence and resilience within modern life.
